Whittier Elementary School created the "ABC Countdown to Summer” attendance incentive campaign. Each day, students engaged in activities beginning with a letter of the alphabet. A few examples included students participating in "C for career day,” "G for glow day,” "L for lemonade day," "M for masquerade day," and "Q for quartet day.” It was great to see students enjoying all of the activities!

Next up for attendance campaigns is Bryant Elementary School! Students earned one Bryant buck ($1) daily for attendance to purchase a special prize every Friday (for $5) during the month of May. Prizes included ice cream, potato chips, bracelets and other toys. During the final week of school, students with at least 95% attendance for the month were entered into a raffle for larger prizes including bicycles, scooters, gift cards and a TV.

Thank you to Mr. Ravi Shah for his 21 years of service to our district as a math teacher at Brooks Middle School! We at Harvey 152 wish him the best in his retirement.

This week, we’ll be featuring more of our schools’ attendance campaigns that took place during the last months of school starting with Riley Early Childhood Center!
The classroom with the highest percentage of attendance had school mascots Riley and Smiley visit. Classrooms kept track of points for the number of students in attendance and an additional point for those arriving on time. Each Friday, the principal would visit the classrooms and give prizes to all of the students with ten points.
The school hosted an ice cream party to celebrate and several students were randomly chosen to take home a new bicycle! Board Member Janet Rogers and Alderman Tyrone Rogers donated the bicycles.

Ms. Mary Jossell’s fourth grade class at Maya Angelou Elementary School worked together to maintain and grow their “Scientific Garden.” In March, all of their plants were grown from seeds in the classroom. Each student journaled daily with observations of growth and necessary care for the variety of plants. Once the weather permitted, plants were transferred outside in a designated lot for transitioning and completing their next growth cycle.
During the final days of school, students were encouraged to take plants home and continue the process of transitioning their plants to harvest. Ms. Jossell reminds her students to remember the 3RRRs: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle!

“School is the place to bee!” As a way to increase student attendance, Maya Angelou Elementary School held an attendance motto contest among students. Congratulations to third grade student Brooklyn as she was announced the winner for her motto and design!
Her design was placed on t-shirts and sold for only $5, thanks to District 152 Educational Foundation funding. As a reward for all students, they were encouraged to wear their shirts in place of their uniforms. And students who earned “perfect or good attendance” (missing 0-5 days of school), were awarded with lunch from McDonald’s!
