Principal's Message

Greetings Brooks Middle School Families and Community Members,

It is with great humility and pride that I introduce myself as the new principal of Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School. My name is Dr. Abeni Hester and I am honored to be here. Over the past 15 years, I have served as an educational volunteer, paraprofessional, P.T.A. member, farm researcher, teacher, instructional coach, curriculum developer, administrative lead for restorative practices, P.B.I.S., and assistant principal in public education.

I come to this role with a strong commitment to educational excellence and equity. I hold a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a science concentration, a master’s degree in school leadership, and a doctoral degree in transformational leadership. Each step in my journey has deepened my belief in the power of relationships, high expectations, and community engagement to transform schools.

As principal, my focus is aligned with our district’s five core areas:

  • Student Growth and Achievement: Ensuring academic engagement and growth for all students.

  • Learning Environment: Supporting a learning environment that is safe, inclusive, and engaging for all students.

  • Elevating Educators: Growing and maintaining a work environment that recruits and retains high-quality staff.

  • Family and Community Partnership: Enhancing communication and community relations.

  • Resource Efficiency: Providing a safe and effective learning environment with fiscal responsibility.

To guide our students toward success, we will emphasize three clear expectations: Safe Conduct: Acting in ways that protect the well-being of themselves and others. Respectful Language: Speaking to and about others with kindness and maturity. Responsible Academic Achievement: Taking ownership of their learning and striving for excellence. For our families and caregivers, we ask for your partnership in three essential areas: Ensuring daily, on-time attendance - a key factor in student success. Engaging in open, two-way communication with teachers and staff. Lastly, working with us as partners in your child’s growth and development.

Together, I know we can build an environment where every student feels valued, challenged, and prepared for the future. I look forward to meeting you, listening to your stories, and working alongside you this year.

In partnership,

Abeni Hester, Ed.D
