Final Week of Summer School 2026
Last week marked the conclusion of the Harvey School District 152 Summer School Program. Throughout the summer, students participated in engaging academic experiences designed to strengthen learning while fostering curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. The final week was filled with exciting STEM activities, educational field trips, and opportunities to celebrate student success.
At Maya Angelou Elementary School (Pre-K through Grade 3), students participated in a variety of STEM activities centered on the scientific method. They were introduced to age-appropriate scientific vocabulary and engaged in hands-on investigations that strengthened their understanding of observation, prediction, and inquiry. One of the highlights of the summer was learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. Students observed the transformation from caterpillars to butterflies, culminating in a schoolwide butterfly release that provided a memorable, real-world science experience for all students.
Angelou students also enjoyed an educational field trip to the zoo, where they explored animal habitats, observed animal behaviors, and connected their classroom learning to the natural world. On the final day of Summer School, students will be recognized for their dedication and commitment, including awards for those who achieved perfect attendance throughout the program.
At Bryant Elementary School (Grades 4–7), students showcased their scientific thinking during a hands-on Kool-Aid STEM Challenge. Working collaboratively, students designed experiments, observed physical and chemical changes, collected and analyzed data, and explored how different variables influenced their results. This engaging investigation strengthened critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry skills while making learning both meaningful and enjoyable.
Students in Grades 3–7 also participated in an educational scavenger hunt at Millennium Park in Chicago. The experience encouraged teamwork, communication, and problem-solving as students worked together to complete challenges while exploring one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Beyond the educational value, the trip provided students with an opportunity to build friendships, collaborate with their peers, and create lasting memories. Students also had a basketball challenge
The Harvey School District 152 Summer School Program provided students with enriching academic experiences that extended learning beyond the classroom. Through STEM investigations, literacy and mathematics enrichment, educational field trips, and collaborative activities, students strengthened essential academic and social-emotional skills while preparing for a successful start to the upcoming school year. We commend our students for their enthusiasm and dedication, and we thank our teachers, staff, and families for making this year's Summer School program a tremendous success.
